Kazakh region undertakes ‘Scared Straight’ initiative (30/01/2019) Kazakh region undertakes ‘Scared Straight’ initiative: police and officials shown inside Kazakh prisons In the Aktobe region of Kazakhstan, the local authorities have developed their own version of a ‘scared straight’ programme. Police officers and government officials have been taken on ‘excursions’ of the region’s prisons to deter them from taking bribes as part of the anti-corruption policy – ‘Aktobe – an honest region’. One of the ‘tourists’ explained: ‘films about prison are one thing, but the reality is completely different!’ |
