Award-winning Gulag novel to be published in English (14/01/2019) The Calvert Journal included the novel Zuleikha by Guzel Yakhina in its must-read books from Eastern Europe for 2019. The novel, set in 1930s Russia, tells the story of a Tatar woman sentenced to penal labour in Siberia and her attempts to survive. Yakhina became interested in the theme due to the stories of her grandmother, who herself had suffered exile to Siberia. The book has won awards in Russia and has become a bestseller.
